Kasse Mady Diabate (1949~2018) hailed from a long family of jèlílujèlílu (plural, jèlílu) are bards, loremasters, and praise-singers in the Manding areas whose functions are story-telling, speaking about lineages, singing and playing music... from Kela (Mali). His ancestor, Morykaba Diabaté, fought beside Sundiata Keita, in the XIIIth century. Kassé Mady has ben gifted of his
grandfather nickname, about whom they say that he had such a nice voice as when he sang, people cried. Thus, he was therefore called also Kasse Mady ("Mady makes cry") - Mady i.e. : a regional
variant of Mohammed/Madu. His voice rang out first in weddings, holidays, and various celebrations. In 1970, he joined the orchestra of Kangaba, the "Super Mande", a name which his brother Lafia
Diabaté, kept to call his current band in Bamako.
In 1972, the government, following a policy of encouragement and of promotion of the national culture begun after
independence, indicated him as singer of National Badema, one of the national orchestras that could best transpose the traditional directory mandingue on the modern instruments. After a passage in
Las Maravillas of Mali (directed by Boncana Maïga, in 1976, Badema is renamed National Badéma of Mali ("national family of Mali"). Thanks to the impressing Kasse Mady Diabaté, the band permanently
marked minds with titles such as Sindiya (recorded later by Ali Farka Toure under title Singya), Fode, which will also be the title of the first solo album of Kasse
Mady, in 1988, produced by Ibrahima Sylla, accomplished by Boncana Maïga.
Fodé has been followed by Kela Tradition (distributed both to Melody),
recorded in a more minimalist way, with an acoustical part emphasising more the talent of Kasse Mady. Kassé Mady also has been involved in the mixed fusion-project Songhai 2, with Ketama, a flamenco
band and
Toumani Diabate, and created Kulanjan, with Taj Mahal. Since, Kasse Mady was discret. But once in Kela, the villagers opened eyes wide in front of the strange effervescence around the infirmary.
Indoors, microphones had been planted. In a split second the house had been transformed into a studio. A famous favourite son of the city was recording, without way, his new album there : Kassi Kasse.
