Duga c'est l'« air du Vautour », le symbole du héros épique mandingue ; Duga est un chant très populaire dans les pays de tradition mandingue qui appartient au cycle de la Geste des Chasseurs, depuis le Haute Antiquité, du moins depuis l'organisation des chasseurs en confréries en Afrique de l'Ouest. Il fut renouvelé plusieurs fois au cours de l'histoire du Mandingue et finit par rester attaché à la ville de Ségou (Mali).

Plusieurs régions d'Afrique de l'Ouest (du Mali, de Guinée ou de Gambie) en réclament la création originelle sans que l'on puisse véritablement trancher. Il existe plusieurs versions célèbres de « Duga ».

Pour ma part, je ne connais que deux versions :

celle de Guinée, prononcée « Duwa », et très proche du chant Sakho DuguSakhodougou est un chant que l'on date précisément dans l'Histoire. celle du Mali, plus précisément la version créée dans la région de Ségou en l'honneur du roi « Koré Duga Koro » puis renouvelée en l'honneur son vainqueur à Ségou, le roi « Da Monzon ».

En fait, « « Duga » n'était le faasa⁽¹⁾ de personne, il était consacré aux rescapés de la bataille, ceux qui avaient été laissés pour morts sur le champ de bataille en proie aux vautours. Ensuite en jouant sur son nom, Koré Duga Koro l'a accaparé⁽²⁾ ; après ce fut le tour de Da Monzon qui fit du vautour son emblème.

Aujourd'hui, au même titre que le JanjonLa légende veut que Janjon ait été le (sur)nom d'un sorcier-chaman aux pouvoirs surnaturels particuliers aux tout premiers temps du Manding... « Duga » is the Song of the Vulture, the symbol of the epic hero in the Manding.

« Duga » is a song very popular in the countries of Manding traditiona and arera that belongs to the cycle of The Epics of the Hunters. It was renewed several times during the history of the Manding and finally remained attached to the city of Segou (Mali).

In the beginning, « « Duga » was the faasa ⁽¹⁾ of nobody ; it was devoted to the survivors of death, those warriors forsaken upon the battlefied to be the prey of vultures.

Then, using some kind of pun, Kore Duga Koro⁽²⁾, the king of the area of Segou, hoarded it ; after him, the song turned into a praising song in honor of the king « Da Monzon », conqueror of Segou against « Koré Duga Koro », who made the vulture his emblem.

Today, like the songs JanjonLegends tell that «Janjon» was (nick?) name of a sorcerer chaman like with great surnatural powers in the very early times of the Manding... Read more., Tara and N'nyaro, Duga is a tribute to action. »

Many countries (Mali, Guinea or Gambia) claim of the first creation of that folksong, but nobody can tell that so. There are many famous versions of « Duga ».

On my own, I know only two versions :

that from Guinea, devoted to the sovereign of the Manding, Sundiata. Pronouncing «Duga» is a little different, subsequently the writing : «Duwa ».

that from Mali, precisely the version created in the Segu area devoted to the king « Koré Duga Koro » then renewed to his victorious foe in Segu, the king « Da Monzon ».
