Petit-fils du grand Djeli Baba Sissoko (1922~2001), Makan Tounkara est né en 1965 non loin de Bamako. Son éducation musicale, c'est son père Mody Tounkara qui la lui a enseignée. Ce fameux joueur de n'goniLe nkoni est un luth de la tradition mandingue classique à 4 cordes à l'origine. C'est l'instrument roi par excellence de la musique classique mandingue... Un enseignement strict, divulgué au détriment de la scolarité de Badjé, puisque son père considérait comme plus important pour un griot d'apprendre à connaître tout le répertoire par coeur que de savoir lire.

Badjé a accompagné dès quinze ans la jeune Adja Soumano, puis il a régulièrement joué avec Amy Koïta. Et de fait, dans les années 1990, il fut reconnu par ses pairs comme « chef des griots maliens » (jeli kuntigui) en même temps qu'il était l'accompagnateur d'Adama Diabaté, griotte célèbre au Mali au début des années 90. Sur son 1er album solo, Mali-N'goni, Makan Tounkara faisait preuve d'une technique classique parfaite et démontra l'étendue des possibilités de l'instrument-roi de la musique mandingue, le seul qui, maîtrisé, confère le droit de porter le titre de «JelibaUn nkonifolá (qui fait parler la kora) est un joueur de n'koni (luth à 4 cordes) nkonifolàlù, au pluriel. «Badjé» s'est entouré pour ces enregistrements des voix de Nanou Coulibaly, Gedon Diara, Adama Diabaté, Djuiby Kanouté, et de celle de son épouse Fatoumata « Djélini  » Kouyaté. Grandson of the great Djeli Baba Sissoko (1922-2001), Makan Tounkara was born in 1965 not far from Bamako. As musical teacher, his father Mody Tounkara taught him. This famous nkonifolà, director of the "Instrumental Ensemble of Mali," put this small traditional guitar in his hands when he was able to strike the strings. He gave Badjé the strict instruction of thejèlílujèlílu (plural, jèlílu) are bards, loremasters, and praise-singers in the Manding areas whose functions are story-telling, speaking about lineages, singing and playing music as they want and hear it. , at the expense of schooling, since his father considered all the most important for a griot to know by heart the entire traditional Malian folksongs and epics repertoire.

As a young fifteen old boy, Badjé had to accompany Adja Soumano, then he has regularly played with Amy Koïta. On his first solo album, Mali Ngoni, Makan Tounkara exhibited a perfect classical technique and demonstrated the wide possibilities of the instrument-King of Mandingo music, the only one, if mastered, that gives the right to be called «Jèlíbà», i.e : «Great Master Griot».
