Cette chanson fut composée au milieu du XX° siècle en l'honneur d'une très belle jèlímusow nommée Tabara NDiaye, d'origine peuhle. Elle chantait si bien que lorsque Nankulang Koma, un chef du district de Niani, sur la rive nord de la Gambie la vit et l'entendit, il en tomba aussitôt amoureux. Koma fut si épris de la chanteuse qu'il l'épousa, malgré elle, dit-on. Bien qu'il la couvrît d'or et de bijoux, le mariage ne dura pas, et Tabara partit vivre à Dakar (Sénégal).

Le chant qui célèbre sa beauté féline et son élégance fut créé, selon les jèlílu« jèlí », pluriel « jèlílu », féminin « jèlímusow » est le mot malinké qui désigne le griot... Tabara Njai (NDiaye) was a Fula singer who performed frequently in the mid-twentieth century in the of Niani District on the north bank of the Gambia River. When Nankulang Koma, a trader and the chief of Niani saw and heard her, he felt in love with her. Koma was so attracted to Tabara that he married her, even though it was against her wishes. Although he covered her with gold and jewels, the marriage did not last, and Tabara went to live in Dakar (Senegal).
