« Donsoké » (le Chasseur) est un conte moral qui appartient au cycle de la Geste des Chasseurs du Mandingue et il est, en quelque sorte, une version mandingue du mythe d'Œdipe.

Le conte dit qu'un chasseur réputé raccompagnait un jour sa petite amie vers son village. Toutes les femmes du village étaient amoureuses du chasseur et sa mère, veuve, le gardait jalousement à l'écart des avances des femmes.

Lorsqu'elle appris que son fils avait une relation avec cette jeune fille, elle fit envoyer un message à son fils fixant un rendez-vous avec la petite amie le soir même. La mère vint au rendez-vous à la place de la jeune fille et son fils, ignorant sa véritable identité, fit l'amour à sa mère. Elle tomba enceinte et la petite amie découvrit le subterfuge. La mère dut reconnaître l'inceste publiquement et le chasseur fut expulsé du village. La mère donna naissance à une petite fille.

Celle-ci grandit sans connaître l'histoire de sa conception. Lorsqu'elle l'apprit, la honte la poussa à s'enfuir. Dans sa fuite, elle rencontra le chasseur, son père/frère qui lui aussi errait seul. Il tombèrent amoureux et se marièrent. Un soir, elle raconta sa vie au chasseur qui comprit alors ce que s'était passé. Il prit son arme et s'enfuit pour se donner la mort.

Nombre de chanteurs ont interprété ce chant mais celui dont le nom reste attaché à ce chant est incontestablement Manfila Dabadou Kante (dit Kante Manfila) de Keletigui et ses Tambourins qui en a fait un tube dans les années 70. « Donsoké » (The Hunter) is a moral tale that belongs to the cycle of Epics Hunters of the Manding and it is, in a way, a Manding version of the Œdipus myth.

The tale has on it that a famous hunter was driving one day his girlfriend to his village. All women of the village were in love with the hunter and his widowed mother kept him jealously from advances of these women.

When she was told that her son had a relation with a girl, she sent a message to his son setting a meeting with the girlfriend on that very night. The mother came instead of the girl ; his son, ignorant of his mother's intention, made love with her. She became pregnant and the girlfriend discovered the subterfuge. The mother had to admit the incest in public and the hunter was expelled from the village. The mother gave birth to a baby girl.

The daughter grew up without knowing the history of her birth. When she had been warned of that, shame impelled her to run far away. In her flight, she met the hunter, her father / brother who also wandered alone. He fell in love with her and they got married. One night she told her life to the hunter who realized then what had happened. He took his gun and fled to commit suicide.

Many singers have interpreted this song but the one whose name is still attached to this song is definitely Manfila Dabadou Kante and his Drums of Keletigui who has made it a hit in the 70s. The diva Bako Dagnon opened her great album « Titati » with a modern interpretation of this classic.
