Naby Camara was born in Boke, a village in the coastal region of Guinea, West Africa. He is a griot or traditional oral historian, as are/were his father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather.
The legendary balafon player Amadu Djabate was Naby's first teacher. Naby began playing music at the age of three, and is a
master of balafon, djembe, and doundoun. Naby is a griot, as are his brothers, his father, his grandfathers, and so on back through the history of his people. Thus, in
addition to being trained as a master musician, he also knows the stories and histories of his people. Thus, Naby is a walking treasure of not only talent, but knowledge as well.
Naby Camara is a two-time recipient of the Juno Award for best Global Album, in 1995 and 2004. The Juno Award is Canada's
equivalent to America's Grammy. It is the highest achievement award given for music in Canada.
